BritMums Video Roundup: Scrambled Eggs, Routines and Wagon Wheels

Video blogging. Two words that seem to be able to strike fear into the hearts of even the most seasoned bloggers. We’re constantly being told that video blogging (or vlogging) is the Next Big Thing, yet at the same time many people find it hard to put themselves in front of the camera and get started. I hear people talking about how they feel they should be video blogging, rather than saying that they want to. Now I love video as a medium – the written word is great, but sometimes you just want to really see what’s going on. A recipe post is greatly enhanced by including a video of the dish being cooked. You can describe features of a product in a written review, but with a video you can demonstrate what you mean. And whilst the meaning of the written word can sometimes be misinterpreted, a video can have the benefit of showing your face, and allowing your audience to hear your voice, and thus get a better idea of what you’re trying to say.

So let me introduce the new BritMums monthly video roundup. I’m always on the lookout for new video blogs, and on the first Thursday of each month I’ll be bringing you my pick of the video blogs I’ve viewed in the last month. I hope this will be entertaining, and may perhaps inspire a few more of you to get in front of the camera!

First up this month, one of my favourite video bloggers did something different in his most recent post. I absolutely love the way that Nick from My Daddy Cooks let his son do all the cooking in this video where Archie makes scrambled eggs, although I must confess my heart was in my mouth a couple of times during the whole thing!

From one cute kid to another, and here’s Sophia from Chez Mummy showing exactly how to wrap your Daddy around your little finger. I have to be careful not to let my daughter watch this one – her Daddy is wrapped quite well enough around her little finger without my giving her ammunition like this!

And whilst we’re talking about kids, we’ve all done it, haven’t we? Said something in front of our kids that perhaps we shouldn’t have done. So I expect we can all identify with Peggy from Perfectly Happy Mum who shares a cautionary tale about swearing in front of your kids.

Onto something more serious now. Over at Cheetahs in my Shoes, Jenny is talking about routine, and how her kids struggled with the change in routine over the Christmas break (goodness, that seems a long time ago now, doesn’t it?!). She is asking for others to share their experiences of how to manage the change in routine over a school holiday so that she can make her half term break a bit easier, so please pop over there and add your thoughts.

Now onto something that’s just plain silly. The inimitable Annie from Mammasaurus has demonstrated her ability to rise to a challenge, by starting her new “challenge Annie-ka” series. The basic deal is – give her a challenge and she’ll vlog herself doing it. In her first episode she demonstrates her ability to place an entire Wagon Wheel into her mouth. Yes, I kid you not.

And finally I have to share my favourite video from last month. This one was widely tweeted at the time it came out, but I have no qualms at all about sharing it here because it is both relevant and funny. As bloggers we have our own special “language” which baffles our non-blogging friends and other halves. Brandi from Mama Knows it all has managed to round up all those little things into one video, which she rather aptly calls sh*t Mom bloggers say. I challenge you to watch it and tell me how many of those things you have said yourself. Personally I think I’ve said all of them!

So now it’s over to you. Did you make a vlog in January? If so please add a link to the bottom of this post.
